Lost All Your Car Keys? Here Is the Fix
It is stressful, but it is a routine job for automotive locksmiths and dealers. The VIN is the starting point: it lets them identify your car and the key it needs.
Step 1: Search, then confirm what you lost
Check pockets, bags, the last places you parked and anywhere a key might fall. Also check whether anyone else holds a spare, and whether a smart key is in a bag nearby. If you hold a valet key or an old key, mention it to the locksmith.
Step 2: Gather what you need
- Your VIN. Where to find it.
- Proof of ownership: registration or title, plus government photo ID.
- Make, model, year, and whether the car has push-button start.
- The exact location of the car.
Step 3: Decide who will do it
- Mobile automotive locksmith: often the quickest and cheapest option when all keys are lost, because they come to the car.
- Dealer: can do any key for the brand, usually at a higher price and sometimes with the car delivered to them.
Get two quotes and ask for the total: key, cutting, programming and call-out.
Step 4: Know what the shop will do
- Verify you own the vehicle.
- Use the VIN to find the key data and, where available, the key code (see key codes).
- Cut the blade, if the key has one, and program the chip or smart key to the car.
- Test every function: start, lock, unlock, trunk, panic and remote start.
Step 5: Reduce the cost
- Ask whether they will program a fob you buy yourself. Use the VIN Key Finder to choose a matching fob and compare the price.
- Have two keys made at the same visit. The second is usually cheaper.
- If you have insurance with key coverage, check it before you pay.
Step 6: Keep it from happening again
Store a spare somewhere safe, take a photo of the VIN plate, and keep the registration handy. If you have a smart key, a small tracker tag can help you find the fob. A spare programmed in advance is far cheaper than an emergency call-out.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a new key if I lost all my keys?
Yes. A dealer or automotive locksmith can make a new key using your VIN after you prove ownership. Expect the work to take longer than adding a spare.
Do I need to tow the car?
Not always. A mobile locksmith can often make and program a key at your location. Dealers usually need the car to come to them.
Can I buy a key online if I lost all keys?
You can buy a matching fob, but without a working key the car may need extra steps to program it. Confirm with the shop that will do the programming before you buy.
What should I do first?
Look carefully for the keys, check whether a spare exists, then gather your VIN and proof of ownership and call a locksmith or dealer for quotes.
