How to Program a Replacement Key Fob
Some replacement fobs can be paired at home in a few minutes. Many cannot. Here is how to tell which camp your car is in before you spend money.
Two things must happen
- Remote functions (lock, unlock, trunk, panic) are paired to the car's body control module.
- Chip or immobilizer function (starting the engine) is paired to the immobilizer. This is the part most people cannot do at home.
A new fob that only needs the remote part may be a do-it-yourself job. A new key that also needs the chip or smart-key pairing normally is not.
Check before you buy
- The FCC ID and part number match your original. See finding the FCC ID.
- The listing shows your year, make and model. Use the VIN Key Finder to confirm.
- The fob type matches: smart key, remote head key or flip key. See the key type guide.
- Your programmer or locksmith confirms they can do your vehicle.
Typical routes
| Situation | Usual route |
|---|---|
| Older vehicle, remote only, working key present | Onboard programming steps from the owner's manual may work |
| Transponder key or remote head key | Locksmith or dealer with a programming tool |
| Smart key, no working key | Locksmith or dealer, with proof of ownership |
| Newer vehicle with secured access | Dealer or specially equipped locksmith |
Tips that save a second visit
- Bring every key you want to keep to the appointment.
- Replace the fob battery before programming so a weak battery does not look like a failure.
- Test everything before you leave: start the engine, then try every button.
- Ask the shop to put a spare on the car's key list while they are there.
When a fob stops working but the car starts
If the engine starts but the buttons do not, the remote side is failing. Try a new battery, then reprogramming, then a replacement fob or shell. See costs for the options.

Frequently asked questions
Can I program a key fob myself?
Sometimes. Some vehicles have an onboard procedure for remotes, usually when you already have a working key. Chip and smart-key programming normally needs a locksmith or dealer tool.
Why will my new fob not work?
Common reasons are the wrong FCC ID or frequency, a fob locked to another car, a missed cut on the blade, or programming that was not completed. Check the part number and buttons first.
Do I need the old key to program a new one?
It is easier with a working key, but it is not always required. Programming without any key is a bigger job. See our lost-keys guide.
Does programming a new key erase old keys?
Some procedures delete previously programmed keys, so make sure every key you want to keep is present and programmed during the session.
Can you replace a key fob without going to the dealership?
Yes in most cases. Automotive locksmiths can usually program replacement fobs, and you can supply a matching fob yourself. Brands with locked-down systems may still require the dealer.
Does Home Depot reprogram key fobs?
Some Home Depot and similar hardware stores copy basic keys and certain remotes, but most do not program car transponder or smart keys. Call the store first with your year, make and model.
