How it works

  1. Enter your VIN. We decode the year, make, model and trim with the NHTSA VIN decoder.
  2. See keys that fit. We list in-stock keys and fobs from UrbanX that match your vehicle, with FCC ID, part number and buttons.
  3. Confirm and order. Match the FCC ID on your current key, then buy and have it cut and programmed.

What a VIN can and cannot tell you

A VIN identifies the car: year, make, model, body, engine and plant. It does not contain the key code, transponder data or FCC ID. That is why we also show the FCC ID on every key and explain how to check yours. Read how to find the right key fob from your VIN, or whether you can get a key code from a VIN.

Frequently asked questions

Can I find a car key by VIN?

Yes, to a point. Your VIN identifies your exact vehicle, and the Finder shows replacement keys and fobs that match it. The VIN itself does not contain your key code or FCC ID, so match those on your current key before you order.

Can you get a key code from a VIN?

Not by reading the VIN yourself. Manufacturers store key codes against VINs and authorised dealers or registered locksmiths can request them after checking ownership. See our guide on VINs and key codes.

Will a key from this site work in my car?

Keys are matched on year, make and model, and each listing shows its FCC ID and part number. A new key still needs to be cut (if it has a blade) and programmed by a locksmith or dealer.

Is this free?

Yes. The VIN Key Finder is free to use. You only pay if you buy a key from UrbanX.

What do you do with my VIN?

It is sent to the NHTSA decoder and to UrbanX to identify the vehicle and find matching keys. We do not ask for your name or email. See the privacy page.
